Celestial Tides by Debbie New

We come from Stardust.

“The atoms of our bodies are traceable to stars that manufactured them in their cores and exploded these enriched ingredients across our galaxy, billions of years ago. For this reason, we are biologically connected to every other living thing in the world. We are chemically connected to all molecules on Earth. And we are atomically connected to all atoms in the universe. We are not figuratively, but literally stardust.”

― Neil deGrasse Tyson

My current body of work entitled Encounters with the Cosmos investigates Interconnectedness and Entanglement through practice-based artistic research. The work spans painting, sculpture, drawing, writing and immersive video, inviting participants to have an encounter with the cosmos.

Through the work, I am combining aspects of Astrophysics, Geometry, Natural History, Philosophy, and Cosmology, using an embodied practice of making-with stardust elements from the Scientific Periodic Table of Elements.

Not only am I making artworks about the story of stardust, but I am also using meditation, channeling, meditative journeying and making-with Stardust Elements to investigate whether it is possible to replicate a state of connectedness when making with, or making about stardust. The research has enabled me to readily connect with universal truths and wisdoms that are accessed sometimes during meditation, and other times during the art-making. I have captured these into a book entitled ‘The Stardust Manifesto’ and a meditative journeying video which invites viewers to have an encounter with the cosmos.
